Yoonkyung Lim is a visual artist and Ph.D. student in Film and Digital Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Working across installation, performance, video, sound, and text, Lim’s practice explores how agency is exercised within and through social relationships and how these relationships are performed and reconfigured. Through participatory and performative situations, the work creates conditions in which people make choices, respond to one another, and possibly shift their perspectives. These range from video letters by migrant domestic workers, to group improvisations in families and schools, to a platform for responding to the codes through which states regulate everyday life.
Drawing on feminist ethics and postcolonial theory, Lim’s recent research examines oral histories, alternative forms of archiving, and diasporic modes of translation, attending to what is possible and what remains inaccessible in the ways people come to know and relate to one another.
Recent exhibitions include the Gangwon International Triennale in Pyeongchang, MMCA Seoul and Gwacheon, and the Coreana Museum of Art in Seoul, with residencies at Artist Residency TEMI in Daejeon and Seoul Art Space Geumcheon. Lim holds a BFA from Korea National University of Arts, an MFA from UCLA, and completed the Whitney Independent Study Program.
